A veritable swarm of Aussie and Kiwi creative and TVC production bods are heading up to Thailand this week to attend the annual Asia Pacific Adfest, held at the Royal Cliff Hotel in Pattaya Beach. While Asian agencies are sure to dominate Print, CB bets the Carlton Draught 'Big Ad', via George Patterson Y&R Melbourne will take out Best of Show in Film.
Almost every Australian and New Zealand TVC production company that has dealings with Asia will be there, plus a growing band of creatives, including many of the judges who are currently hard at work before joining other delegates from Thursday onwards to enjoy the Festival, which culminates in the Film Award ceremony on Saturday night.

Here's a Question. Is Adfest on the Australian/NZ CB rankings list? I think I noticed that AWARD isn't on the Asian CB rankings. So much for the hard work AWARD is doing to get in the Asian market.

Rumour has it AWARD will be on the CB Asian Rankings soon. Adfest is not on the CB Aust/NZ rankings and unlikely to be.

No best of show, but I did not factor in the jury and where we were (Thailand, which also won Best Print). But The Big Ad was the undisputed crowd favourite on the night, it got the biggest applause. The punters at these shows always know best. All international jurors this year should say to themselves, what will be the one ad that I will remember from 2005/2006 in ten years time? That ad is the Carlton 'Big Ad', it won't be Sony 'Balls' and certainly not what won at AdFest.

Oh come on they may not be a copy of one another but it is a big bunch of guys dressed as a choir singing about the beer to the same piece of music (might even be the same choir - sounds like it)...Thing is, is it real and which came first? Not the first time Carlton Breweries were involved in a rip off of a Molsons beer ad ( in 2000 with the Molson's 'Rant' ad and the Fosters "I Believe" ad). Back then Carlton Breweries said they didn't rip it off but were "inspired by" it. Who was inspired by who this time? Anybody know? Is there a catagory in the awards for best ad inspired by another ad? Oh you can see the ad on the site and then go to Television and select the 'kick' ad and look at the 2nd ad for Molsons.

The things that are in common is the piece of music and the fact the choir is dressed in Red Robes (as opposed to Red, Yellow and White in The Big Ad). But that's where the similarity ends. The (Molson) Rickards spot is a bit of a fizzer really, and was probably produced after the Taxi creatives saw The Big Ad on the Net. (The Rickard spot was not entered at Cannes last year, so guess it was created late last year, whereas The Big Ad was shot in NZ in May last year and went viral worldwide in August).

Actually the Molsons beer ad had already been aired in Canada in July last year so guess it came first.

Have you any proof of that? Was it on AdCritic or somewhere in July? If so, please provide the proof to clear this whole thing up. Any idea who the director and production company were for the Rickards spot so I can check with them?

Co-opting Culture

There is nothing more frustrating for me than seeing a commercial on television that would be perfect for this column, and then never seeing it again. This happened to me the other day when I saw the new Rickard's Red commercial with the monks singing about how great Rickard's Red is. Immediately, I hit record on my PVR, as it can record things you've already seen. Imagine my dismay when I find out that for some reason, the PVR only recorded part of the show, and not the part that had the commercial in it. Baffled, I was... and disappointed.

So, if you've seen this commercial, you might know what I'm talking about. If you don't - I'm sorry.

Basically, the commercial is as I described it. Half a dozen monks dressed in scarlet robes sing the virtues of Rickard's Red as it is poured. The song they are actually singing is from Carmina Burana - the first movement, O Fortuna. Even if you don't recognize the name, you've heard this song, I guarantee. It's standard end-of-the world music.

I have a lot of problems with this commercial... and all of them are on principle.

First of all, the monks change the lyrics to something like:
"Oh, Rickard's Red
So clean and smooth
We really like to drink it..."

(those aren't the actual lyrics, but they're similar, and they fit the rhythm)

The original lyrics, which are in Germanic Latin, translate to:

Fate - monstrous

and empty,

you whirling wheel,

you are malevolent,

well-being is vain

and always fades to nothing,


and veiled

you plague me too;

now through the game

I bring my bare back

to your villainy.

Yeah! Exactly what you're looking for in a beer commercial! The whole thing is about whores and how the world is dark and terrible. Granted, I'm probably one out of about 1000 that knows that, but still...

OK, now can someone from Patts Melbourne or Paul Middleditch get back to us with the chronology of The Big Ad. Like when it first came into being, early draught of the script, client approval date, so we can compare to what was happening in Canada. By the way, I found out the Molson's Rickard Beer spot was directed by Tom Kuntz, who is repped by Suneeva in Canada. I have emailed them asking for timings. The idea in each ad is no way alike, but it's interesting both have guys in coloured robes singing to that same sound track.
