TSUNAMI STRIKES TWICE: CLEMS WELLINGTON CREATES WAVES OVER BMF SYDNEY CONCEPT
Dan Moth and Scott Henderson from Clemenger BBDO, Wellington were surprised to see the the tsunami billboard done by BMF for Medicine Sans Frontiers (below) on the CB Blog.
Says the pair: "It caused a few ripples over here because it is exactly the same as an idea we had already run, which appeared on the 5th of June and ran until the 21st of July.
"Our billboard was part of a big, national campaign for Civil Defence, the government agency charged with preparing people for disasters. The entire campaign incorporated outdoor, press, radio, online and a suite of five TV commercials. Here is the billboard we produced (top)."

Same visual, but completely different ideas - both equally relevant. If anything, the curl at the top of the MSF billboard is the difference between in the Book and metal. Only problem now is that juries might see both together and chuck them both out, which would be a pity.
who is this self-appointed "judge" who calls him or herself "awardwatch"? who are you to tell us from your high altar what "is metal" or "in the book"... what a twat.
come on...simple fact ...BMF has ripped it off...enough!
who is this self-appointed "critic" who calls him or herself "anonymous"? who are you to tell us from your high altar what "a twat" or "not a twat"?
Does anyone feel like a Lion Red?
no one ripped anyone off. it is just the same idea. a first thought that most people would have if faced with this brief. but the kiwis did it first so all cred to them.
Oh dear...egg on face Warren.Wave the award goodbye.
"Metal" is worthy of bullshit bingo and we shouldn't be using such wanky terms. Stop it now.
"Here's a picture of a big wave. Give some money to medecins san frontieres."
When I was learning advertising, just dramatising the problem was not really regarded as 'good' because it didn't tell me anything about the product/service.
MSF are an outstanding organisation and probably have a zillion interesting stories. There might be a better ad in one of them.
guys, it is 3.32 am in the morning in europe and I am sitting around waiting for the studio to finish some layouts for me. I hear them downstairs laughing their heads off and playing games. they are taking their sweet fucking time about it. I am not going to leave until probably six or so.
I am ready for a tsunami. anything to fucking end this bollocks.

PS Sorry guys, back to advertising now.
If the Clems ad ran 5th of June, was it entered into Cannes this year, or did it miss the deadline?
1.18- why do you ask? Surely you don't think it would win do you?

Surreal!
It's a 1st though. Of COURSE it's going to come up more than once.
Just a quickie.
I think the Clems ad should be instantly discounted due to it's 'yoof' spelling of the word 'through.'
Anon here.
Does anyone know where I can source XXXL condoms? Kate Moss and I are hooking up for a shag. I just don't want to catch anything that Pete Doherty might have given her.
Don't worry about Pete Doherty, go for the tail shaft.
I bet neither team were given the brief. I reckon it was more like, ' Imagine a wave on the side of a building. Now, what client could we do it for...?'
It's one of those ideas where you think, 'A wave on a building would look cool. I wonder what client I could get to run it."
Just to set the record straight.
As someone who was working at Clemenger Wellington when this campaign was being developed (for a major NZ government Civil Defence campaign), I can totally vouch for the fact that this was but one part of a much wider integrated campaign developed by Dan Moth and Scott Henderson. The TV, radio, print, online and ambient ideas all fitted within a wider strategy developed from a 'real' pitch brief designed to drive people to a website (and the Yellow Pages) carrying detailed information for the public on how to survive a major natural catastrophe.
The Clemenger work, and this execution in particular was no scam.
Clemenger also came up with (and executed) a 'yawning chasm' earthquake fault line in a major, public foot traffic area as another part of the ambient ideas for the Civil Defence campaign.
These ideas were developed, presented to the client and approved some months earlier than their execution.
As stated earlier, I have no axe to grind as although I was at Clemenger BBDO Wellingon at that time, I have since moved on.
'Nuff said.
Lee Parkinson, TOUCH/CAST NEXT
Yeah yeah, snore, snore.
Scott Henderson is an incredible guitar player.
But not THAT Scott Henderson.
