BEST TOPICAL AD
Lance
Publicis Mojo Melbourne

A pretty interesting win given it was for something that happened over a year and a half ago (and long after Lance retired). It seems to be the ad that keeps on giving every single year for the past three years.

Saatchi & Saatchi Auckland are down for 5 & 3.

So does that mean they actually have 8 or is it a typo?

It's all about Saatchi's isn't it?

Typical.

Yeah, damn those Saatchi folk, always winning everything.

Saatchi's for agency of the year again i reckon.
Love them or hate them, you can't deny them.

Lance... yeah, that got a finalist at the MADC before the most recent ones - so that'd have to be about 18 months ago, well before the cutoff for the 2005 Caxtons, you'd reckon.

Just one of those 'enter it until it wins something' things. The funny thing is - an 18 month old idea wins BEST TOPICAL AD.

Oh, the irony.

3.15 check your facts. Last year's tour de france, which was won by Lance Armstrong, happened in July last year, which is the first month of eligibility for this year's caxtons.

But the Lance ad was made and published in January 2005...get your facts straight yourself 7.06

So was eligible for 2005 Caxtons.

7.06 - this isn't 3.15 here, but I can certainly tell you that the Lance ad ran after Lance Armstrong won his second-last tour (not his most recent win), because it appeared at the madc two years ago.

Either that, or they entered it into madc six months before it even ran.

bingo. and we have a winner.

by the way, it's just the Caxton's.

to my best knowledge, 'lance' ran first in newspapers last year (making it eligible for caxtons)...previous to that it had run in magazines only.

So if AMVBBDO runs Guiness surfer on the web this year it's eligible for an interactive lion? Honestly, gimme a break. It's an ad from last year, Mojo, write something new.

7.06 here. I stand corrected. The ad should be pulled. If it first appeared in Jan 2005 it was conceived at the end of 2004. Seems a little strange that 2 years later it's still getting into shows, even if it is a great ad - which it is.

The Nike 'Lance' ad appears in Seen+Noted on page 47 of Campaign Brief December 2004, presumably applicable to the 2004 Tour de France, so it should have been entered in last year's Caxtons (and Cannes), not this year's. Rest assured, AwardWatch will be bringing it up with the Caxton Committee, especially as it would be a shoe-in (pardon le pun) for a Caxton.

The Lance ad was made to celebrate the 2004 Tour de France win by Lance Armstrong and entered in the 2005 Cannes Lions, but failed to make it to the Finalist stage (check the Cannes Archives). If it ran in a newspaper in 2004, it was definitely eligible for last year's Caxtons. It certainly is not eligible for this year's Caxtons and should be withdrawn immediately.

what a massive surprise that a furby disciple would re-enter his ad over and over again in the hope of more metal. i'm just frickin astounded.

Can someone give me a quick description of the Cummins 'Surfboard' ad?

11:33 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

fairly average I thought.

a guy standing at an airport check in, and he's inside a boardbag, only his feet showing.

can't remember the headline, that's probably why I thought it was average.

btw, that was an average description.

but it made it into caxton so it probably wasn't average.

hmmm.
