Stick that in your pipe and sniff it Sydney, ALL Melbourne agencies and not ONE from Sydn... oh, hang on...

Yeah... Sydney have not and will never ever be good enough at the MADC. We are a SAD lot, indeed. By the way, Smart have done alright coming third, beating Clems no less.

Middleditch, a Kiwi! Shot in NZ. SFX by Sydney's Animal Logic. What exactly did Melbourne do?

Clems? Who. Pfft, they're soooo 2005. I reckon grey batted well, with 10 finalists. Smart are a surprise, they keep sneaking up. M&C need to lift. But, it'll all come out in the wash (not really even sure what that means, but I think it means we'll see who wins the metal (or plastic)).

Sydney Vs Melbourne Vs NZ Vs Tasmania. Who cares. A good ad is a good ad.

guys. JWT is on the list. If those bottom feeders can make on there...

It's a pile of poo!

Yes, Patts are doing some brilliant stuff but doesn't go any deeper than that. come AWARD, Asian Adfest and Cannes who on that list will still be there? Patts and maybe Mojo.

Why bother with MADC. what is the point?

3:52 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Because it's simply a reflection of the works that's coming out of the city. No-one is saying that the MADC is the benchmark of the global standard, you twit, it's merely a yearly overview of who's doing well. Jesus, I hope you don't have kids.

but back to MADC. why is it a sack of shit? When I first started in advertising i started in melbourne. And all wide eyed the industry in melbourne made out like MADC was the be all and end all of creativity. how was I to know the smalled minded twits were lying. But then I went to work in sydney and europe. Suddenly I realised that clems and M&C were actual piles of poo in the greater scheme of things. And the creatives from clems and m&c who had always acted like king shits were tossers.

For the boys at SMART:

Shiny diamonds
Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you

Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun 'till you see the light
Oh we will pray it's all right

Gotta get away-get away

Between the velvet lies
There's a truth that's hard as steel
The vision never dies
Life's a never ending wheel

You're the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid

Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he's mean
Some light can never be seen

when is the D&AD finalists list come out? Is it only on the night?

11:40 PM

MACD has too many categories me thinks, esp when compared with the shows that matter - d&ad, one show and cannes.

now Smart's getting serenaded by Dio lyrics...this blog's getting weird. By the way, clem's wouldn't be happy with their performance. Not at all. Wonder what Ronny Mather's up to there?

Thanks 3.52 but Adfest and AWARD have been and gone and you'll be delighted to note that work from Melbourne agencies other than Patts and Mojo has already received gongs.

PattsY&R, Mojo, Smart.

An interesting top three.

The big guns aren't so big anymore.

We'll see what happens at the show though.

Hmmmmm, Nike, Big Ad, Toyota, Mercedes, Dulux, VB all pulling metal in Sydney and around the globe - yeah, things must be shit in Melbourne. I'd hate to have a crack at CUB brief. Hacks! Sydney rocks - we're all positive and supportive and only the worlds best ads get made, like... um... you know that one a few years ago for a tongue. and... Melbourne's shit.

5:52. Nice one for actually posting a positive blog about the smart "boys" but just to keep thing gender equal there's also a very smart girl there who is responsible for about half of the work entered (all the BIC stuff).

Well done Rebeccy

11.16 - putting "Patts, Mojo, Smart" in a group together is wishful thinking. Try "Patts, Mojo" There are about 20 points between 2nd and 3rd on the list.

if you're comparing the work at MADC to the work done by a kinda kid you're pretty much bang on. the standard is appalling. 5 year olds could ahve done better.

bar patts and mojo the rest is drivel.

4:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey 4:46, I didn't realise you'd seen all the work submitted for the MADC. What else was there? I'd like to know.

6:01 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I suspect that 4.46 is the same person as 3.52 and while he/she may think the work done by agencies other than patts and mojo is drivel, the judges at real award shows like adfest and award have awarded some of it gongs. I suppose that at least that gives you another bunch of people (the judges at these shows) to call useless, hopeless and unqualified.

8:47 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

no, wouldn't do that. they gave a few things this year so it wouldn't be right.

8:51 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

JWT melbourne is on the list. come on! they are the lowest form of creative bottom feeder known to the sweet lord above. And he knows everything.

8:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

True enough, 8.53. JWT Melbourne is a genuinely shithouse agency and probably the only one on that top10 list you wouldn't want to work at.

Having a quick trawl through the madc site, it seems they got finalists for vegemite (for which they should thank mojo who set up both the campaign tonality and art direction some years ago) and Ford - which shows that if you do a million ads for one of Australia's biggest clients, you're going to fluke something every now and again that's ok.

Otherwise, there's actually some pretty good work coming out of plenty of agencies on that list. Patts/Y&R have the numbers largely due to CUB (and they should have the numbers given that the work they entered was TWO agencies worth - let's not forget that), Mojo have done a great job on Nike this year and the others have some nice highlights.

Clems have really dropped the ball, doing solid work for big clients but without the genuine highlights an agency of that size and reputation should have. If you tallied up the collective salaries of their creative department, you'd struggle to see the return on investment, I reckon.

8:53, in regards to JWT, you would have said the same thing about Patts a few years back.

give glen some time to have a crack at it. you need a year or two to work with the clients and set up a dept. it took patts a few years to get it right.

Just a few observations on the MADC inalists.

By my reckoning about 16 of the George Patts Y&R finalist are from Y&R work done prior to the merger. It's only an estimate, but i reckon an accurate ballpark. Either way the merger makes their overall number look a lot more impressive. Which inturn makes Mojo's stand alone haul pretty fucking impressive.

Incidentally, about 28 of Mojo's finalists have come from Nike, with the remaining few spread on Nestle, Toyota and Tourism Vic. Obviously Foster's was the cash cow for Patts, infact excepting for perhaps that austereo "Cock" spot (not sure when that was made) I don't think Patts actually got finalists for any other client. Y&R's contribution to the Patts hauled was more spread, though predominantly Chupa Chups, they contributed to the mix with work from Defence, Cottons, NGV and Yellow. Bic has been good to Smart with about 9 of their finalists coming from that client, while Clem's 11 odd were spread across Sorbent, Gillette, Masterfoods, Just Jeans, TAC and Very Special Kids, with notably no work from last year's dominator Dulux. DDB are also quietly sneaking back onto the radar having been virtually non-existent for most of the 21st century. What ever happened to Bjorn Reitz anyway? M&C are obviously fading, no surprises there, while JWT's 10 aint bad, though I wonder if the Craig Davis glow (read spin) helped out there? It's also good to see young sean dipping his toe back in the water again this year, having shunned the awards a bit in the past. Get a finalist for Kmart and we'll all be impressed.

Also Cornwell Design, who won the most trophies at last year's awards picked up a lazy 16 finalists, while Paper Stone Scissors grabbed 8.

All and all not a bad spread i reckon.

Good luck all.

And Clems just ditched National Foods (Big M and Pura Milk). Good luck next year on the client you have left.

3:52 PM

3:52 i actually think it's pretty cool they ditched a client or two that was making life a misery for them.

better than just bending over and taking the cash like most agencies.

5:00 PM

they didn't. they just saw the writing on the wall and tried to save face by 'resigning' the account before they were sacked.

Same as Just Jeans, that tired of the whole "Emma's Formula" of dramatazing the name of the product to do an ad. Apparently, it wasn't working. Fuck me dead if wahtever mojo are doping will....it's atrocious...

perhaps some seperation of conjoined agencies should be conducted to work out who (Patts OR Y&R) got the most nominations. the merger's 'success' or otherwise won't be quantifiable until next year.
Where's Tony anyway?
