HORNER LURED TO FILL WHYBIN TBWA SYDNEY CD GIG

CB hears former DDB national CD, Garry Horner, who left the agency last month after a decade in the job, has been lured to the ECD job at Whybin TBWA, Sydney, which has been vacant since the end of last year after the departure of Mick Hunter. (The latter of course went to JWT, a stint that lasted less than three months).
In other news, Nathan Hodges has been promoted to general manager of Wthe agency. He joined Whybins a year ago after five years at BBH London. CB hears there are other major appointments in the pipeline at Whybins which should be announced in the next few weeks.

Congrats Garry. If any agency (apart form JWT...) is crying out for a creative miracle it is that place.
When was the last time they did anything notable?

I can’t help feeling Horner has let himself down.
Isn’t Whybins more of an online agency these days?

Eh? I work at Saatchis and I never got to do any scam ads. I was too busy on project work for Toyota and winning pitches for online businesses, dammit!

Garry is a better CD that Simon Collins though. Plus he's done better work. Good one Gazza. Let's slam Simon now!

3.58pm - i think you've made a very good point. Garry is better than Simon. Although I agree with most of the comments above about Garry, at least he doesn't excrete from his mouth like Collins does.
I wasn't aware Collins is now based in the US, but all I can say is good ridance! We don't need old-school hacks in or around the industry anymore.
Maybe he's gone to the US because they have a wider selection of processed pork products to chew on.

10:47 - You are obviously a numbnut. Though we do have great digital people, Whybins is a fully integrated agency that has done some great print and TV work for clients like St.George and AAPT. If you want to make comments do a bit or research first.

I read this blog earlier today and there was so much more on it. At least 20 comments have been deleted. What was reading as a very anti Horner/Whybin's blog is now a slightly critical but mostly positive reading of the move he has made. Surely not all of those comments were defamatory. Being negative does not give enough excuse for removing them. The comment on who had turned down the position was not defamatory or personal. This is not monitoring, this is censorship and renders the blog useless and a false reflection of the opinion that is being expressed.

Most opinions on this blog are false anyway though. Still, it's all a bit of a laugh, innit?

Doris, you said,

'This is my first and last post on this blog, so flame me, ignore me – I don’t really care'.

What a lame attempt at making yourself feel like you're having the last word.

If you really didn't care, you would have saved us the thesis. Which was pretty boring to read by the way. I thought English people were supposed to have a sense of humour.

Oh, and I'm not a guy, so you're wrong about that too.

Doris,
You go on about 'have they been angry at you, looked at you funny etc.'. There a whole ballpark of other reasons why these two fuckwits are getting slagged. I won't go into too much detail, but let's just say you're wrong.

Yeah Simon is really an extraordinary talent. You'd have to be to live with yourself after inflicting "sultanas on the grape vine" on the unsuspecting white breading eating Hill's District folk who watch commercial t.v. They deserve better!

In answer to a previous post that has since disappeared: I work at Whybins and I know for a fact only three creatives were approached for the Whybins gig: Ted Royer, Matt Eastwood and Garry Horner. Ted decided to stay in New York after all, Matt took Garry's old DDB job instead, and Garry said yes to Whybin. Our former CD Mick Hunter was not approached (helloooo?), and certainly not Rocky and others mentioned. As far as we are concerned, having Garry on board is a coup. From all accounts, he works hard and plays hard, our type of CD. I suspect that DDB might rue the day they let him go.

Just had a thought on a sunny Sydney sunday morning: Sydney Suit, used to be at The Palace, admits he's now at Whybin. Only two men fit that profile: Des Speakman and Reg Bryson. Now all we need is for someone on the inside to check their emails.

7:55 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

... if, in fact, they're a fucking suit at all. Which I doubt.

I don't know Speakman, but I know Bryson isn't a big enough prick to deliberately sabotage a creative team's work. And I'm not sure anyone else is either.

I'd bet a cool $1000 that it's someone winding us all up.

Here's your first lesson children. Gary Horner anong with his then writer Rowan Dean were responsible "Photo Booth" for Hamlet Cigars. Several Years ago it was universally voted into the advertising hall of fame as the best ad of the century.

So all you youngsters who believe that "The Campaign Palace" is a chinese restaurant on George Street, stop your xenophopic slagging off, and work on your craft. Because believe me you obviously need it.

It was television sketch for fuck sake and they, the seven or so people who actually have their name on it, think they wrote a great ad. The ad is almost frame for frame the sketch with the same bloody actor - so sorry this does not make anyone who's name is on this ad great, just means they are good at nicking other people's creative thinking.
