All these types of events are fucked up ego strokes as well as being a complete waste of tax payers' money. Where's my hospitals? Where's my roads? Where's my trains? Where are the schools for my kids? Fuck the Olympics. Fuck the Commonwealth Games. Fuck sport all together.
Fanta Pants
fanta pants, events like this create thousands of jobs over years and years.
sounds like you'd rather a handout...
Are the Commomwealth games on?
9.02 - hand outs are good but I'd prefer a national focus on something, anything other than sport.
Maybe you can explain to us all the mass long term employment opportunities created by a large one-off sporting event?
I personally know dozens of people in jobs that were created by the Sydney Olympics and the Brisbane Commonwealth Games...
Just one example of it being worth it: The new venues that were built for the Sydney Olympics (at no cost to the public because the games actually made a profit for NSW) continue to employ thousands of people each year. Think of all the events held each week.... footy, soccer, rock concerts you name it.
It's about time Melbourne simply accepts that it will always play second fiddle to Sydney.
Will someone please explain why we have a 'uni' in Canberra called the AIS that is free and is payed for by the taxpayers? I fail to see why the sporting careers of Australians are more important than the Law/finance/art/science or any other field for that matter. Shit, we can't even win the Ashes, Rugby world Cup and scrape into the Soccor World cup. Nobody gives a shit about the Commonwealth games. The AIS is a terrible waste of money and makes bugger all long term jobs.
end of rant
Tatiana Gregorieva's body is mind-boggling. I'll happily subsidise the AIS to produce a few more like it.
Australia is an extraordinarily sport-centric nation. We all know this, nothing new there. But we don't have an AIS or a VIS or NSWIS because John Howard rather fancies sport, we have these programs because we as a people demand it. We take immense pride from the success of our athletes and thus the nation's morale and sense of confidence is boosted when we win.
Do we spend a disproportionate amount of money on these ITC (intense training centre) programs? Possibly, but is it reasonable for us to think they are a waste of money? I don't think so. Maybe our next Cannes entry fee could go to a worthier cause?
My brain hurts.
To the person dishing smack toward sport, I'm sorry for your obvious lack of coordination. Maybe if you tried tunnel ball instead of burning ants with a magnifying glass, you wouldn't have been such an outcast. Australia's onus is sport. The sooner you realise this, the sooner you might jump off the top bunk and head to the MCG.
"...jump off the top bunk and head to the MCG"?
What's the rush? They've only got aerial ping-pong on from now until the Boxing Day test.
Tatiana Gregorieva's mind-boggling body was a result of years of training in Russia. Her talent pre-dates her change of camps to become an Australian , a bit like the former pom who won the backstroke for Australia. Overseas talent goes along way here.
i love watching the cricket.
1.39PM - At least be sure you know how to use the language properly, otherwise you might shoot yourself in the foot.
You said, 'Australia's onus is sport.'
'Onus' means a disagreeable responsibility or burden.
My point exactly.
YOU GOOSE
It also means just plain responsibility. Stop cutting and pasting meanings from dictionary.com. You duck.
to compare the commonwealth games to the olympics is like comparing the cannes advertising festival to the cannes film festival. Like cannes ad festival, the commonwealth games is a competition for people who can't win medals so they decided to make up their own medals.
At least they werent held in New Zealand
10.14am. Second fiddle - if that means not getting bashed by a lamb cutlet or bottled/mugged by indigenous city dwellers then you can keep playing the lead.
8:44 AM > yeah, The Comm. games are about as important as your next ad you toss pot.
Is this an advertising blog or did I just stumble across The Age newspaper 'Your Say' section? This post is so mainstream even my Mum has an opinion on it.
Advertising is mainstream you plonker.
the Comm games were ok for a school sports session. The ceremonies were hilarious until i found out how much they cost..... poorly written/executed crap. The Olympic ceremonies were inspiring, entertaining and beautiful. until i found out how much they cost. At least they weren't embarrassing.....
Anyhoo..... back to ads?
To 4:44pm
Yes advertising is mainstream because it is aimed and consumers. But this blog is for people working in the advertising industry, not the consumer. Do you see the distinction?
Love, Plonker
Gee sorry Plonker I did realise you're on here for inside info. Hey by the way, did you hear that...
